    Product details

    Background & context

In 1881 Muhammad Ahmad proclaimed himself Mahdi in the Sudan and within a few years raised armies that became a danger first to the Egyptian administration and then to British expeditionary forces. His Ansar fought with spear, sword and captured rifles, but their real weapon was numbers. Khartoum fell in 1885, shortly before the relief force arrived, and Gordon's death turned the campaign into a political issue in Britain. Only in 1898 did the Mahdiyya come to an end at Omdurman.

    On the tabletop

The 40 Ansar warriors represent the Mahdi's army in the Sudan between 1881 and 1885. Armed with spears, swords and captured rifles, they seek close combat. Their strength on the table is numbers: several units attacking at once put British lines and squares under pressure. Command figures and flags mark the leaders of each band. Further boxes expand your force for actions up to the fall of Khartoum.
