    The M3 Lee carried its 75mm gun in a hull casemate and a 37mm in the turret, a stopgap until the Sherman was up and running. The kit gives you the choice between a short and a long main barrel.

    Background & context

    When the USA ramped up its tank production in 1940, there was simply no turret ring that could carry a 75mm gun. Instead of waiting, the gun was built into the hull and a smaller turret set on top. On paper that looks backward, but in battle other things counted: reliable engineering and a high-explosive shell that put British crews in the Western Desert on equal terms for the first time. Soviet units received the type through Lend-Lease and liked it considerably less.

    On the tabletop

    In Bolt Action the M3 Lee is a medium tank with two guns: an anti-tank gun in the hull and a lighter one in the turret, plus a machine gun against infantry. It fits American and British lists for the Western Desert, the Indian Army in Burma and, as Lend-Lease armour, Soviet forces. During assembly you choose the earlier short or the later long main gun. A stat card and damage markers are included, so it can go straight into your armoured platoon.
