    Background & context

    Die Waffenfabriken der Republik kamen 1793 nicht hinterher. Wer keine Muskete bekam, zog mit einer Pike los, einem Stück Stangenholz mit aufgesetzter Spitze, das jede Dorfschmiede an einem Tag fertigte. Der Konvent erklärte die Pike kurzerhand zur Waffe des freien Bürgers und deutete die Not in Propaganda um. Gegen Salven taugte sie wenig, aber sie machte aus einem Haufen Freiwilliger eine Formation, die drohend aussah.

    On the tabletop

    Anyone who did not get a musket in 1793 went to war with a pike, and this regiment shows exactly that emergency armament of the young Republic. It consists of 20 randomly selected pikemen and a command group of officer, musician, NCO and standard bearer. In Black Powder the unit has no firepower, it belongs in close combat and its pikes protect it against cavalry. Placed next to musket-armed line battalions, it covers a flank.
