    Background & context

    Die Chouannerie zog sich von 1794 bis 1800 durch Bretagne, Normandie, Anjou und Maine und blieb dabei immer ein Krieg kleiner Gruppen. Man überfiel Postkutschen, Steuereintreiber und Marschkolonnen und war beim Gegenangriff längst wieder Bauer auf dem Feld. Der Name geht auf den Ruf des Waldkauzes zurück, das Erkennungszeichen in der Nacht. Dudelsack und Messe gehörten dazu: Die Bretagne kämpfte für ihren Glauben und gegen Paris zugleich.

    On the tabletop

    From 1794 to 1800 the Chouans waged a royalist uprising against the First Republic in Brittany and Maine, mostly in small groups and from ambush. In Black Powder you play them accordingly as irregulars in loose order who lie in wait along woodland edges and attack marching columns. The regiment contains 20 insurgents, an officer, a bagpiper, a priest and a standard bearer. Their opponents are Republican troops of the same years.
