    Product details

    Background & context

The Milizia Volontaria per la Sicurezza Nazionale was Mussolini's party force and took the field with its own legions from 1935. Recognisable by fez and fasces, the Blackshirts fought alongside regular divisions in Ethiopia, Spain, Greece, North Africa and Russia. Their quality varied enormously, from wretchedly equipped volunteers to veterans who had Spain behind them. The M37/M40 uniform cut lasted through the whole war.

    On the tabletop

Regular army and Blackshirt militia both come from the same box of 30 Italian infantrymen. The M33 steel helmet, bustina cap, pith helmet and soft or hard fez decide whom you represent, and the Sahariana smock adds variety to the uniforms. With Carcano rifles, the Beretta M38A and the Breda M30 light machine gun you build Bolt Action squads for North Africa, Greece or the Eastern Front. The Blackshirts fought there alongside regular divisions.
