Product details

Background & context

Rorke's Drift is above all a story of individual men. Lieutenant John Chard of the Royal Engineers was only there because of the ferry on the Buffalo River, and Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead commanded B Company, 2nd Battalion, 24th Regiment. Surgeon James Reynolds tended the wounded under fire, Chaplain George Smith handed out cartridges, and Corporal Christian Schiess of the Natal Native Contingent received one of the eleven Victoria Crosses. The attackers were Zulu regiments that had stood in reserve at Isandlwana.

On the tabletop

Start by laying out the mission station: thatched hospital and storehouse, surrounded by kraal walls, wagon barricades, crate and sack walls and the mealie bag redoubt. Cookhouse, ovens, latrine, bell tents, fences, engineers' wagon, water cart and cattle fill the ground around the post. Behind the breastwork Chard and Bromhead deploy the 20 redcoats, while Bourne, Hook, Surgeon Reynolds and Chaplain Smith take up their posts. Against them come 40 Zulu warriors led by one mounted and two further InDunas. The game uses Black Powder; the rulebook is not included.
