    Background & context

At the Alma on 20 September 1854, Sir Colin Campbell led his Highland Brigade of the 42nd, 79th and 93rd up the slope to the Kourgané Hill. Instead of halting to fire, the three battalions carried on advancing in line, fired on the move and threw the Russian columns back with the bayonet. The scene made the Highlanders the showpiece of the British Army in the Crimean War, even before the Thin Red Line at Balaklava five weeks later. Their regiments stayed on the peninsula until the fall of Sevastopol in 1855.

    On the tabletop

Eight charging Highlanders bring the Crimean War to your British army for Black Powder. Their historical model is the Highland Brigade, which advanced up the slope in line at the Alma on 20 September 1854, firing on the move and driving the Russian columns back with the bayonet. These figures therefore belong in a unit you send forward to attack. As the blister holds only eight men, you build larger units from several packs.
