    Background & context

    A Gurkha battalion kept its heavy weapons together in the Support Platoon so that the commander could apply firepower wherever a company was stuck. In Italy in 1944, on the hill positions around Monte Cassino, that was precisely what decided things: machine guns in sustained fire on the crest of the slope, mortars against the trenches to the rear, and between them an officer with a map and a radio link. The riflemen of the Indian divisions did not go for their objectives until these weapons were on target.

    On the tabletop

    This Bolt Action box builds a complete Gurkha heavy weapons platoon: a mortar team, a machine gun team and a platoon commander. Six crew figures and the commander are in Warlord Resin, while the weapons come from British plastic sprues, whose spare parts you can use for further Gurkha units. The .303 Vickers fires directly, the 3 inch mortar in an arc over cover. As around Monte Cassino in 1944, you use them to put fire on enemy positions before your riflemen advance.
