Background & context

Gottfried Heinrich Graf zu Pappenheim führte erst die Reiterei der Katholischen Liga, später kaiserliche Verbände. Gemeinsam mit Tilly schlug er das dänische Heer Christians IV. und wurde dafür in den Grafenstand erhoben. Er gehörte zu den Belagerern von Magdeburg 1631, dessen Plünderung bis heute als Tiefpunkt des Krieges gilt. Seinen Ruf machte er endgültig gegen die Schweden Gustav II. Adolfs. Bei Lützen 1632 starb er so, wie er gelebt hatte: an der Spitze einer Reiterattacke.

On the tabletop

Pappenheim leads the cavalry of your Imperial or Catholic League army in Pike & Shotte, ideally at the head of his cuirassiers. As a reckless cavalry commander he belongs where you are looking to decide the battle with a heavy charge. Scenarios include the campaigns with Tilly against Christian IV, the siege of Magdeburg in 1631 and Lützen in 1632, where Pappenheim fell leading a cavalry charge. The mounted figure is metal.
