The foundation of every Landsknecht army: from this box you build either 30 pikemen or 25 pikemen and 5 arquebusiers. A command sprue and a flag sheet are included, which makes the regiment complete.

Background & context

Maximilian I raised the Landsknechts because the Empire had nothing of equal worth to set against the Swiss pike squares. In the course of the Italian Wars the Germans overtook their models, not with longer pikes but with the interplay of pike and firearm. That shift is exactly what the kit depicts, because the same parts make either a pure pike block or a mixed formation. The slashed doublets go back to a concession by Maximilian: sumptuary laws did not apply to these men.

On the tabletop

In Pike & Shotte the pike block is the core of a Landsknecht army, presenting a wall of points to cavalry. This box builds 30 pikemen or 25 pikemen with 5 arquebusiers, and with that the combination of pike and firearm that gave the Landsknechts the edge over the Swiss in the Italian Wars. The command frame provides officers, standard bearers and drummers, and five flags are included. The figures also serve as Tyroleans or early Swiss.
