Hintergrund & Einordnung

The 17th century was an era of immense military conflicts that fundamentally reshaped Europe. In the Thirty Years' War-one of the bloodiest wars in European history-powers contended for religious supremacy and political dominance, while entire regions were devastated. Simultaneously, in the British Isles, the English Civil Wars shook the foundations of the monarchy as Parliament and the Crown entered into a bitter armed conflict. Nobles, townspeople, and common soldiers were forced to take sides-often against neighbors or even family members. Both conflicts profoundly shaped not only military history but also the state and social order of their time.
