    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    German tank crews saw action on all fronts during WWII, including in extreme winter conditions. Especially on the Eastern Front and during the winter battles in Western Europe from 1944 onwards, the climate placed high demands on both men and material - most tanks lacked adequate heating, fuel and lubricants froze in extreme cold, and crews often spent hours in the cold performing maintenance or observation. Characteristic features of German tank crews in winter included the reversible winter camouflage jacket (white/grey), lined coats worn over the black tank uniform, fur hats, and felt boots. The set depicts typical scenes: crew members with heads partially visible from hatches, as well as dismounted tank soldiers - including a particularly touching scene where a commander brings a wounded comrade to safety.
