    Background & context

    In 1944/45 German tank crews fought almost entirely on the defensive: in Normandy, in the Falaise pocket, in the Ardennes and finally between the Rhine and the Oder. Fuel was scarcer than ammunition, and many a vehicle was lost without having fired a shot. Anyone who lost his vehicle took up a carbine or submachine gun and fought on as an infantryman, usually still in the black panzer uniform and side cap. The men of the Tiger and Panther battalions were regarded to the last as the elite of an arm that had long been on the defensive.

    On the tabletop

    Late war, 1944 to 1945: by then German tank crews were fighting almost entirely on the defensive, from Normandy through the Ardennes to the land between the Rhine and the Oder. The four partial figures fill the hatches of a Panzer IV, StuG, Tiger or Panther, and three dismounted men carry on the fight on foot. If you lead a German force of the final months of the war in Bolt Action or Achtung Panzer! this gives its vehicles visible crews.
