    Background & context

    Die deutsche Infanteriegruppe war um ihr Maschinengewehr herum aufgebaut - die Schützen sicherten die Waffe, nicht umgekehrt. Auf Lafette und mit eigener Bedienung aus dem Waffenzug beherrschte es Abschnitte, für die sonst ein ganzer Zug nötig gewesen wäre. Im Winter 1944/45 wurde das zur Geduldsprobe: Verschluss und Gurt froren fest, Öl musste ausgewaschen und hauchdünn neu aufgetragen werden, und die Bedienung lag stundenlang bewegungslos im Schnee.

    Three men in winter uniform crew this machine gun for Bolt Action, suited to battles on the Eastern Front or in the winter of 1944/45. With its own crew such a gun dominates a whole sector and forces attacking infantry into cover or onto detours. In snowy terrain with little cover this is especially telling. Set the team up so that it covers the open strip in front of your squads, and your opponent will have to come round the flank.
