Background & context

For the German Landser the greatcoat was often the only winter protection that reached the front in time. From the winter of 1941 units improvised with blankets, camouflage covers and captured clothing, until usable winter kit finally followed in 1943. Grey-green coats, turned-up collars, snow on the steel helmet: this image defines the fighting before Moscow, at Kharkov and later in the Ardennes. For the table that means muted colours, hard contrasts and a very rewarding paint job.

On the tabletop

With 48 men in greatcoats you are well stocked for infantry: that is enough for four squads that can still hold objectives after the first losses. The platoon is led by the metal HQ, with the MMG and mortar teams behind it as weapons teams. For the transport you choose between Opel Blitz and Maultier; it brings a squad out of reserve and drops it off where things are hottest. The Panzer IV is the only fighting vehicle and supports the infantry in the centre. Put on snow bases, this makes a large Heer platoon for winter scenarios.
