    Background & context

    Nach 1789 verließen Zehntausende Adlige, Offiziere und Geistliche das Land; ein Teil von ihnen stellte an Rhein und Themse eigene Regimenter auf. Bezahlt wurden sie von den Koalitionsmächten, die damit billig erfahrene Offiziere bekamen. Der bitterste Moment kam 1795 auf der Halbinsel Quiberon: Eine britisch unterstützte Landung brach zusammen, Hunderte Émigrés wurden gefangen genommen und erschossen. Danach zerfielen viele dieser Verbände oder gingen in fremden Armeen auf.

    On the tabletop

    Nobles, officers and clergy who left France after 1789 formed their own regiments on the Rhine and the Thames, paid by the Coalition powers. With 21 infantrymen plus an officer, a standard bearer and a musician you build such a regiment for Black Powder. It serves as line infantry in a British or Austrian army. An obvious scenario is the landing on the Quiberon peninsula in 1795, which ended with hundreds of émigrés taken prisoner.
