Product details

Background & context

France entered the war in 1939 with one of Europe's largest and best-equipped armies, boasting modern armored units, powerful artillery, and battle-hardened infantry. However, the 1940 campaign turned all strategic assumptions on their head: the rapid German advance through the Ardennes undermined rigid French defensive concepts before they could take effect. Despite the swift collapse of the front, many units put up fierce resistance and fought until their ammunition was exhausted. The Hotchkiss machine gun, a veteran from World War I, proved to be a reliable, albeit technically outdated, backbone of many strongholds.

On the tabletop

A French platoon of 1940 needs leadership and heavy weapons as well as riflemen. The set contains two officers, a medic and a forward observer, along with an 81 mm mortar team and a Hotchkiss machine gun from the First World War. The Brandt mortar fires in an arc at enemies behind cover, and the old but dependable machine gun lays down sustained fire. This gives your French force in Bolt Action everything it needs beyond the infantry sections.
