Background & context

In 1939 France fielded one of the largest armies in Europe, strong in numbers and by no means technically inferior. It was carried by formations from metropolitan France as well as from the colonies: Algerian, Moroccan and Tunisian Tirailleurs stood alongside line regiments, fortress garrisons and Chasseurs à pied. What was missing was a command that could keep pace with the speed of the German armoured formations. Within six weeks in May and June 1940 the front was lost.

On the tabletop

The Char B1 bis is the only vehicle in the box, heavily armoured and therefore the point the enemy's anti-tank defence gets bogged down on; its stat card is included. Around it stands an infantry platoon: the metal HQ leads, the 36 multi-pose plastic figures become three squads, and during assembly you decide which troops they represent, for instance line infantry, colonial troops, engineers or Chasseurs. Mortar and MG teams provide the fire support, and the 25mm anti-tank gun deals with lightly armoured opponents. With damage markers and decals the platoon is ready to play for the campaign in the West as soon as everything is built.
