Hintergrund & Einordnung

In 1939, the French army was considered one of the strongest in the world - experienced from World War I, with modern tanks and heavy artillery. However, the German Blitzkrieg relied on speed and depth, overwhelming the rigid French defense lines. Nevertheless, many units offered fierce resistance at Hannut, Arras, Boulogne, and Saumur. After the 1940 armistice, parts of the army fought under the Vichy regime, while others, under de Gaulle, continued to fight against Germany as Free French forces and returned to France with the Allies in 1944.

Einsatz im Spiel

The set is exceptionally versatile: depending on the configuration, regular infantry platoons, well-entrenched fortress troops, mobile Chasseurs à Pied, pioneer units, or the battle-hardened colonial troops from Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia can be deployed. This allows for the representation of Early War scenarios in Northern France and Belgium, as well as North African and Mediterranean campaigns. The units are suitable for offensive movements as well as for the tenacious defense of terrain sections.
