Background & context

In 1866 Bavaria still took the field at Austria's side against Prussia, and four years later it stood as an ally within the very same Prussian army organisation. Two Bavarian corps fought in 1870 at Wörth, before Sedan and in the winter campaign on the Loire. The Raupenhelm with its woollen crest remained in use into the 1870s and makes Bavarian troops immediately distinguishable on the table.

On the tabletop

With 24 line infantrymen, four command figures and eight Jäger you can field Bavarian infantry for the war of 1870/71. The Jäger move ahead in skirmish poses while the line follows in close order. You choose the crested Raupenhelm or the field cap during assembly, and the same troops can also fight alongside Austria against Prussia in 1866. For 1870/71, actions such as Wörth, Sedan or the winter campaign on the Loire fit well, with French line infantry as the enemy.
