Product details

Background & context

In the Crimean War, Russian Uhlans still carried the lance as a distinctive cavalry emblem. Their Polish-influenced uniform with a czapka clearly set them apart from other Russian cavalry units. Like many cavalry units of the era, they were caught between impressive ceremonial power and the new demands of modern battlefields.

On the tabletop

Three metal lancers represent the Russian lance-armed cavalry of the Crimean War in Black Powder, which counted as light cavalry. The lance is most effective against enemies who are already disordered or fleeing, while against formed infantry with rifled muskets it struggled in 1854. So keep the riders back until such a chance arises. They were dressed in Polish style with the czapka, usually under an oilskin cover in the field, and a greatcoat.
