Background & context

The Heavy Brigade of the British Army was one of the best-known cavalry formations during the Crimean War. At Balaklava, it was led by General Sir James Yorke Scarlett and attacked a larger Russian cavalry force. The deployment of the heavy cavalry was distinctly different from the Charge of the Light Brigade, which became famous later the same day. Heavy Dragoons thus stand for the powerful, disciplined charge of British cavalry in the mid-19th century.

On the tabletop

British heavy dragoons formed the Heavy Brigade in the Crimean War, and these three metal riders are a building block for it. You paint them as Royals, Inniskillings or Dragoon Guards, and several packs make a playable unit. In Black Powder they deliver the closed charge against cavalry or throw back enemies who have broken through. At Balaclava the Heavy Brigade threw a much larger mass of Russian horsemen into disorder in this way and saved the supply base.
