    The heaviest tank France put on the road in 1940: 47 mm gun in the APX4 turret, 75 mm howitzer in the hull. Can be built as a French tank, as a captured German tank or as one of two flame tank versions.

    Background & context

    France concluded from the First World War that the next war would call for a breakthrough tank, and the result was the Char B1 and its reinforced version, the B1 bis. In 1940 it was superior to the German tanks in armour and firepower, but it guzzled fuel and was too slow for a front that shifted every day. After the fall of France the Wehrmacht took 161 vehicles into service as the Panzerkampfwagen B-2 740(f), and some of them were converted into flame tanks.

    On the tabletop

    The Char B1 bis fits French army lists for 1940 and, as the captured Panzerkampfwagen B-2, German lists too. Its 47 mm turret gun takes on tanks while the 75 mm hull howitzer deals with infantry and positions. It is slow, so use it as a breakthrough tank in the centre rather than for fast flanking moves. During assembly you choose the French or German gun tank or one of the two flamethrower versions.
