Background & context

The winter of 1944/45 was harder on the Allied formations in north-west Europe than many an opponent: frozen ground in which no position could be dug, and weapons that played up in the frost. During this time British and Canadian battalions fought their way through the Scheldt estuary, the Ardennes and into the Rhineland. The machine gun teams wore coats, hoods and anything else that could be scrounged, a look that differs markedly from the summer battledress of Normandy.

On the tabletop

The water-cooled Vickers dated from the First World War and gave British and Commonwealth troops sustained, accurate fire from defensive positions wherever they fought. This team consists of the machine gun and three crew in winter clothing. In Bolt Action it belongs in the heavy weapons platoon, punishes infantry caught in the open and holds key positions. Together with rifle sections in winter dress it makes a coherent force for north-west Europe in 1944/45.
