Background & context

The 3-inch mortar was the standard fire support of British and Canadian infantry battalions: light enough to be carried broken down, and ready to fire within a few minutes. It engaged targets that no rifleman in the company could see and forced enemy positions to move. In the winter of 1944/45 Canadian and British formations fought in the flooded Netherlands, in the Reichswald and in the Ardennes, where greatcoats and snow camouflage were part of the basic kit. Those are exactly the months these figures depict.

On the tabletop

Three men in heavy winter clothing crew a medium mortar for British and Canadian forces in Bolt Action. Medium mortars are one of the core elements of a heavy weapons platoon. From behind your own line you shell enemy infantry and weapons teams in cover, range in on them and force them to relocate. The figures suit the winter of 1944/45, for example fighting in the Ardennes or the Reichswald.
