    Background & context

    Cetshwayo's army was organised by age group: young, unmarried regiments with dark shields formed the fast horns, while the older, married amabutho with head rings and light shields held the chest and delivered the decisive blow. On 22 January 1879 this pattern played out in exactly this way at Isandlwana and cost a British column its camp. On the gaming table, the difference between the two groups shows who outflanks first and who waits.

    On the tabletop

    Young unmarried regiments and older married warriors wearing the head ring make up this Zulu brigade for Black Powder. Twelve bases of each give three large units per group. With them you set up the Horns of the Buffalo: the young regiments run around the flanks as the fast horns, while the older ones hold the centre as the chest and decide the fight. On 22 January 1879 it went exactly like this at Isandlwana, an action against British troops to refight on the table.
