Product details

Background & context

William Hale designed his rocket in 1844 as a successor to the Congreve rocket. Instead of a long guide stick, angled exhaust vents gave it a spin that kept it steady in flight. The British Army adopted it in 1867 and used it in colonial wars mainly for its effect on enemy morale, since accuracy remained poor. At Isandlwana the rocket battery under Major Russell, which had ridden out with Durnford, was overrun right at the start of the fighting.

On the tabletop

A rocket battery is lighter than a field gun and can go where gun carriages struggle. In Black Powder Epic Battles, use the three launchers as mobile support on a flank or send them ahead with mounted troops to shoot at and unsettle advancing warriors. If you refight Isandlwana, the battery belongs to Durnford's column, whose rockets were overrun early in the day.
