Product details

Background & context

The 7-pounder started life as a mountain gun, small and light enough to be broken down and carried by mules. For South Africa the Royal Artillery mounted the barrel on light field carriages with broader wheels that would not bog down in the long grass. At Isandlwana on 22 January 1879 two of these guns were lost when the camp was overrun. At Kambula and Ulundi, by contrast, shell and canister tore gaps in the Zulu attacks.

On the tabletop

As a mobile battery, the two 7-pounders travel with your British columns and open fire as soon as an impi comes into view. In Black Powder Epic Battles, place them at a corner of the square or on a rise so they can hit advancing warriors at range before the infantry volleys take over. For Isandlwana they stand in for the two guns left in the camp.
