Product details

Background & context

The Signal Corps goes back to Albert J. Myer, an army surgeon who worked out a code for a single flag before the war. Each swing to the left or right stood for a digit, groups of digits formed letters, and torches were used at night. Edward Porter Alexander, who had worked with Myer, organised the Confederate signal service and in 1861 used it at Manassas to warn of a flanking move. Later both sides put up tall wooden towers that let observers see far across the countryside.

On the tabletop

Set the tower on a hill or at the edge of your deployment zone as an observation post for the Union or the Confederacy. In Black Powder Epic Battles it makes a natural objective: whoever holds it can watch enemy movements and direct their own batteries. With the signallers and their flags it also forms a small scene behind the line, for example next to a headquarters.
