Background & context

From 1805 Bavaria was Napoleon's most important German ally and sent contingents to Austria, Spain and Russia. In 1809 the army gave up the slung knapsack and the gaiters and re-equipped on the French pattern; the Raupenhelm stayed and made the Bavarians instantly recognisable on any battlefield. Of the roughly 30,000 men who marched into Russia in 1812, only a fraction returned. In October 1813, shortly before Leipzig, Bavaria changed sides.

On the tabletop

Bavarian line infantry from 1809 fights on your table alongside the French in Austria and Russia, and after the change of sides in 1813 against them. The 36 marching figures form the column, the 16 firing ones the firing line, and four command figures lead the battalion. The two mounted colonels turn this into a brigade. The crested helmet makes the Bavarians recognisable on any battlefield, while knapsack and cut of the uniform follow the French pattern.
