Background & context

After the defeat of 1805, Archduke Charles reorganised the Austrian army, and in 1808 the Landwehr was added: a levy from the hereditary lands intended to free regular troops for the front. A year later it took the field at Aspern and Wagram, with very mixed success depending on origin and leadership. Instead of white coats it mostly wore grey or brown clothing with facings that varied by region, which provides a welcome contrast to the line on the gaming table.

On the tabletop

The Landwehr was the Austrian levy raised from 1808 to free regular regiments for the front. In your army it occupies villages and quiet sectors so that the line regiments can save their strength for the attack. Grey or brown coats set it apart from the white-clad line. The 48 Landwehr men, their command group and the two mounted colonels make one battalion with its commanders, as it took the field at Aspern and Wagram.
