Background & context

From 1806 the shako gradually replaced the old leather helmet, and that is how you recognise the Habsburg troops of the second half of the wars at first glance. The line regiments advanced in deep masses, a legacy of Archduke Charles's reforms, and in 1813 at Leipzig provided a good part of the Allied infantry. Under Schwarzenberg this army marched all the way into France and stood before Paris in 1814. Over two decades Austria was Napoleon's most persistent opponent on the Continent.

On the tabletop

From 1806 the Austrian line wears the shako, and these 56 figures cover it up to 1815, from the campaigns after Archduke Charles's reforms to Leipzig in 1813 and the advance on Paris. The 48 infantrymen form a battalion in deep mass or in line, and some of them can be built firing or loading. Interchangeable arms give officers and mounted colonels their own gestures. Alongside grenadiers and Landwehr, this set provides the bulk of your Habsburg army.
