    Background & context

The Empire distinguished between German and Hungarian regiments: the former in white coats and white breeches, the latter in tight blue trousers. After the defeat of 1805 Archduke Charles rebuilt the army, introduced corps formations and in 1808 gave the infantry the higher-cut coat. Over the following years the old crested helmet gave way to the shako, which is why Wagram and Leipzig look different. Austrian battalions were formed in depth and built to withstand pressure.

    On the tabletop

With 48 figures you can field an Austrian battalion of the German regiments for the campaigns of 1809 to 1815. An officer, standard bearer, drummer, sapper and two NCOs form the command. The helmet shows the troops of Wagram, the shako the later years up to Leipzig, and the Korsehut a Landwehr battalion. In games Austrian battalions stand in deep formation and absorb pressure, while artillery and cavalry complete the brigade.
