Background & context

Nach Braddocks Niederlage 1755 zogen sich die Überfälle bis tief in die Siedlungsgebiete von Pennsylvania und Virginia. Ganze Landstriche wurden binnen Monaten geräumt, die Grenze verschob sich um über hundert Kilometer nach Osten. In den meisten Kolonien war jeder wehrfähige Mann zum Milizdienst verpflichtet und musste Waffe und Munition selbst stellen, ausgebildet war davon kaum jemand. Verteidigt wurde deshalb, was man erreichen konnte: das eigene Haus, die Mühle, die befestigte Scheune im Nachbartal.

On the tabletop

Farmers and craftsmen with their own guns are not soldiers, yet they are at the centre of many frontier scenarios. With the eight metal armed settlers you raise a small militia in Black Powder that defends a house, a mill or a fortified barn. Such men had hardly any training, so they work best behind walls and fences. Raiding parties of the kind that pushed deep into Pennsylvania and Virginia after 1755 make suitable opponents.
