Product details

Background & context

Mealies is the South African word for maize, and heavy sacks of it were stored by the hundred in the Rorke's Drift depot in 1879. Urged on by commissariat officer James Dalton, Chard and Bromhead chose to hold the post rather than withdraw and had the bags stacked into a wall between hospital and storehouse. When the perimeter proved too long, more bags became a tall redoubt in front of the storehouse, a last refuge for the wounded and for marksmen.

On the tabletop

Bags of maize made up most of the outer wall at Rorke's Drift. These four sections let you rebuild such a bank and run it around a building or a yard. In Black Powder that gives a British company a position from which it can beat off attacks from several sides in the Anglo-Zulu War. Add the hospital and storehouse and the whole mission station takes shape. Parts are supplied unpainted and unassembled.
