    Product details

    Background & context

The redcoat of 1879 stood on average under 1.70 metres tall and was often barely able to read. What made him dangerous was the Martini-Henry, a breech-loader with a heavy lead bullet that was still effective at long range in volley fire. That is exactly what British tactics in South Africa were built on: fire discipline, close formation, the long bayonet as the last answer. Where this order held, as at Rorke's Drift, the position held too. Where it broke, as at Isandlwana, it was no help at all.

    On the tabletop

For the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 the plastic parts make 24 British infantrymen with the Martini-Henry breech-loader, suitable for any British unit of that campaign. In Black Powder the unit relies on long-range volley fire and discipline in close formation, with the long bayonet held back for the end. A booklet covers the history and Black Powder profile of the troops. With them you can play scenarios such as Rorke's Drift or Isandlwana against the Zulu.
