Background & context

The Continental Army came into being in 1775 and remained the insurgents' only permanent force until 1783, always short of money, shoes and cloth. After the winter at Valley Forge, Steuben drilled it to a uniform system, which first became visible at Monmouth. Uniforms came from French deliveries, from captured stocks and from home production, which is why colours and facings changed from regiment to regiment and from year to year. Anyone painting them has a correspondingly free hand.

On the tabletop

These 38 figures make a Continental Army regiment for the years 1776 to 1783. Up to three officers, two standard bearers, a drummer and two NCOs lead the unit, and up to four figures can be built as riflemen for the skirmish line or as soldiers in hunting shirts. Three types of headgear and a guide covering more than 120 uniforms let you portray many different regiments. Their opponents are the British redcoats.
