Background & context

A British regiment had eight centre companies and two flank companies, and in America the latter were almost always taken out and combined into separate grenadier and light battalions. What was left was the hat man, and he made up the bulk of the army. In the field the coats were shortened, the tricornes taken apart and long gaitered trousers worn. Anyone who stood at Saratoga in 1777 no longer looked the way he had on the parade ground in England.

On the tabletop

The 36 redcoats represent the hat men of the British centre companies in the American War of Independence. For each figure you choose a tricorn, a slouched hat or the cut-down Saratoga cap, so you can show regiments from different campaigns. On the table they form the line battalions advancing against Continentals and militia. The two wounded figures work as casualty markers or on a scenic base, and flags and a painting guide are included.
