Background & context

A Civil War battery usually numbered four to six guns, plus limbers, caissons and draught animals, so that the train needed more room than the cannon themselves. Batteries mixed smoothbore twelve-pounders for canister fire at short range with rifled barrels such as the Parrott for long, accurate shots. The crew worked through a fixed sequence of drills and stayed at the gun even under fire. In defensive positions such as the Hornet's Nest, artillery decided whole sectors.

On the tabletop

Three guns, three limbers and 18 gunners give you a battery for American Civil War games. Each gun takes one of four barrels: Napoleon 12pdr, 12 pdr howitzer, 3 inch Ordnance Rifle or 10 pdr Parrott. The smoothbores fire canister at short range, the rifled pieces reach far and shoot accurately. Limbered up, the battery is shown changing position; unlimbered, it stands ready to fire behind your infantry.
