    Product details

    Background & context

The Zouaves reached America as a fashion from North Africa by way of the French army. In 1860 Elmer Ellsworth toured the country with his US Zouave Cadets and turned their drill into a crowd-puller, so a good many volunteer regiments formed up in fez and baggy trousers in 1861. In the field the conspicuous clothing wore out quickly, and some units ended up wearing it only on parade. On the table that is precisely the appeal: a unit that stands out from the rest at once.

    On the tabletop

The 42 Zouaves with their command group make a volunteer regiment in fez and baggy trousers, as many states raised them in 1861. The alternative arms let you build the men advancing with shouldered muskets or charging. The fez with or without turban, the flags and the included uniform guide help you portray a particular regiment. Within your brigade the unit stands out at once from line regiments in plain coats.
