    Product details

    Background & context

Between 1839 and 1919, British Indian armies marched into Afghanistan three times and three times ran into the same problems: passes that cannot be secured and opponents who vanish into the mountains after the fight. The levies of the North-West Frontier had no fixed military system, but they knew every slope, and their weaponry was a mix of heirlooms and booty. Captured Martini-Henrys stood alongside hand-forged jezails, and at Maiwand in 1880 that was enough to take a regular column apart.

    On the tabletop

This box lets you field Afghan fighters for the actions on the North-West Frontier against British-Indian armies. The weapons decide period and role: pulwar, Khyber sword, dagger and shield for the close-combat mob, musket, jezail or Martini-Henry for the marksmen among the rocks. That way you fight from passes and slopes against approaching columns and withdraw into the mountains after the action.
