Product details

Background & context

At the Khyber Pass things went back and forth for more than a century. Three Anglo-Afghan wars and countless actions on the North-West Frontier rarely ended in a decision, because the terrain made the rules: narrow passes, steep slopes, no room for formations. The tribal warriors knew every path and fired the jezail, a long-barrelled flintlock rifle, at distances British muskets could not reach. Later, captured breech-loaders were added.

On the tabletop

The 36 tribesmen give you an Afghan war band for the Anglo-Afghan wars and the fighting on the North-West Frontier. The two command frames supply the leaders, and flags are included. In games the band fights from passes, slopes and rocks where British formations have no room to deploy, and engages the enemy with the long-ranged jezail. A booklet by Mark Urban puts the force into its historical context.
