    Product details

    Background & context

Generals and their staffs coordinated brigades, divisions, and corps on often chaotic battlefields during the American Civil War. Mounted officers could transmit orders more quickly and better survey their units. Staff officers assisted with reports, map work, and communication with subordinate units. Such groups on the game table represent the command level of an army.

    On the tabletop

A mounted Union general with three staff officers forms a command post in Black Powder from which your brigades receive their orders. Without officers to pass orders from the general down to the private soldier, hardly anything moves in Black Powder. Historically much of the Union army ran through its staff: aides carried messages, engineers drew maps, and on smoke-filled battlefields the mounted group was often the only way to get orders along the front.
