Product details

Background & context

American cavalry rode to war in 1861 with sabre and carbine, and until 1863 it mostly dismounted to shoot on foot. Its real work was not the mounted charge but seeing and concealing: scouting, screening columns on the march, cutting the enemy's railway lines. At Gettysburg, Buford's dismounted troopers held the ground until the infantry came up. That is exactly the role this arm plays on the table too.

On the tabletop

Twelve riders give your American Civil War army its mounted arm, for either the Union or the Confederacy. Their main job on the table is less the charge than scouting and screening: they reach a flank or a crossroads quickly and delay the enemy until your infantry arrives. Like Buford's troopers at Gettysburg, the unit can dismount and fight with carbines.
