    Background & context

    The M4A1 was the first production version of the M4 medium tank and was instantly recognisable by its rounded cast hull; beneath it worked the air-cooled Continental R-975 radial engine. Together with the M4A2 it came through its first actions in November 1942 during Operation Torch in North Africa and gradually displaced the old M3s there. 6,181 of the 75 mm version were built, and the British designated it the Sherman II.

    On the tabletop

    The cast-hulled M4A1 was the first Sherman in series production and fought from November 1942 in Operation Torch in North Africa, where it replaced the older M3. In your games its 75 mm gun deals with infantry in positions as well as with medium tanks. You build the early version with direct vision slots for the driver or the small hatch version, and add a turret with a low or high bustle. The British called it the Sherman II.
