    Description

    On the LVT-4 the engine moved to the front and the rear was given a large ramp. Rubicon makes it a working part, and there are also hatches that open and a waterline variant for tables with a strip of coast.

    Background & context

    From August 1943 the LVT-4 went into production as the most-built amphibian of the war: 8,348 vehicles left the factories. The trick was simple and effective: engine to the front, rear opened up, ramp in. Instead of climbing over the side, the men could get out at the back, and capacity rose from 17 to 30 soldiers. The type made its debut off Saipan in June 1944, and after that it was used by Marines, the US Army and British, Canadian and Australian units.

    On the tabletop

    On the LVT-4 the troops leave the vehicle over a large rear ramp, and up to 30 men fit inside. In your landing scenarios from Saipan in June 1944 onward it therefore puts a whole infantry unit ashore in one trip, although it is mainly a transport. It was used by the Marines and the US Army as well as by British, Canadian and Australian units. The ramp stays movable on the model, and hatches and a waterline option are included.
