    Background & context

    The rasputitsa in the spring of 1941 brought German supply in Russia to a standstill. Wheels dug themselves in, and the real half-tracks were needed at the front. So lorries from Opel, Daimler-Benz, Alfa-Romeo and Ford were taken, the rear axle was thrown out and discarded running gear from the Panzer I was hung on the shortened shafts. Most of these Maultiere were built on the Opel Blitz and cost less than any purpose-built half-track. From 1943 armoured versions followed as the SdKfz 4, some of them with the ten-barrelled Panzerwerfer 42.

    On the tabletop

    The Maultier was born because the mud in Russia in 1941 trapped German trucks: this Opel Blitz runs on tracks at the rear instead of an axle. On the table it moves supplies, ammunition or a squad across difficult ground, but with no armour it belongs behind the fighting troops. You choose the cargo bed for the early or later war years, standard headlights or blackout lamps, and the rear tarpaulin open or closed. A driver and a passenger are included.
