    Beschreibung

The SdKfz 251/22 - also known as the 'Pakwagen' - armed the tried-and-true half-track with a high-performance PaK 40, making it one of the most feared anti-tank support vehicles of the late war period. This expansion set from Rubicon Models adds the characteristic Pakwagen configuration to the SdKfz 251/1 Ausf D (280018) with a fully detailed interior, two crew figures, and the cannon in either travel or firing position.

    Produktdetails

    Hintergrund & Einordnung

The SdKfz 251/22, known in field jargon simply as the 'Pakwagen' (tank destroyer vehicle), arose from the necessity to equip the proven half-track with a powerful anti-tank weapon. A PaK 40 L/46 or L/48 was mounted on a bracket made of two H-shaped girders on the chassis of the SdKfz 251/1 Ausf D, and the gun shield was given characteristic beveled angles. The vehicle preferably operated from camouflaged, prepared positions - the cannon's range allowed it to engage tanks at a distance before they could return fire. The chassis was actually not designed for the weight and recoil, which caused frequent failures - nevertheless, Hitler classified its production as top priority in December 1944.

    Einsatz im Spiel

The SdKfz 251/22 Pakwagen mounts a PaK 40 on a half-track. In-game, it offers mobile anti-tank capabilities, but must be used carefully due to its open and lightly armoured platform. It clearly fits into late-war lists, where improvised and mobile anti-tank measures became more important.
