The 25-pounder howitzer was the workhorse of the British artillery: high-angle fire over the heads of its own lines and, in an emergency, direct fire at tanks. Here with limber and a crew in winter clothing.

Background & context

The Ordnance QF 25-Pounder reached the troops in 1940 and remained the standard gun of the British field artillery until the end of the war: 87.6 millimetres in calibre, a range of around eleven kilometres and a circular firing platform on which the carriage could be swung round in seconds. At El Alamein almost a thousand of these guns opened the battle. For emergencies the batteries carried armour-piercing shot, because direct fire was still better than no anti-tank defence at all. The gun was towed together with its limber, in which the ammunition travelled.

On the tabletop

As a light howitzer the 25-pdr lobs shells over the heads of your own troops or fires directly at targets it can see. In Bolt Action you can also let it fire as a light anti-tank gun, a makeshift answer to vehicles that come too close. Three British or Canadian crew in winter clothing serve it, and a resin limber is included. That puts it in the artillery platoon of your British or Canadian winter force.
