    Background & context

When the fronts collapsed in 1941, tens of thousands of sailors from the Baltic and Black Sea Fleets went ashore as naval infantry. In black coats and striped telnyashka shirts they fought before Leningrad, in Sevastopol and in the Crimea, with a reputation for never giving up a metre willingly. The ZiS-3 they serve here became the most-produced gun of the war from 1942: light enough to be pushed by its crew and, with over 100,000 built, present in every division. So fleet personnel stood at land guns when the ports had to be held.

    On the tabletop

The ZiS-3 gives you two jobs in one gun in Bolt Action: as a howitzer it lobs shells onto positions, and over open sights it takes on tanks. That lets your Soviet artillery respond to whatever your opponent brings. The three Naval Brigade crew figures represent sailors who fought ashore as naval infantry. The gun therefore suits forces for Leningrad, Sevastopol and the Crimea in particular.
